Small Works. All of the larger works include layers constructed by painting directly on small canvases and pressing them against the main canvas with varied manual application techniques to achieve patterns and textures that make each painting also a shallow relief. Some of these small canvases become paintings unto themselves (others are just a blurry mess) and are shared here as calves (or foals, or offspring) of the larger work. The small paint-engorged canvases that don’t hold up on their own are used as complex, textured foundations for new works. A few samples below. All are paint on canvas, typically 12-14 inches/30-36 cm square.
